The cheapest way to ship clothes you sold online: mailers, weight and labels
For US resellers and small brands: when to use the marketplace label, how USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail compare, and how to pack clothes small, dry and light.

Key takeaways
- 1Sold on Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Vinted or eBay? Use the platform’s label. It is usually the cheapest, and it is what the platform’s protection covers.
- 2For your own store, a poly mailer on USPS Ground Advantage wins for most clothes. Priority Mail Flat Rate wins when a heavy order fits in the envelope or box.
- 3Weight and size set the price: weigh every parcel, round up, and keep boxes under one cubic foot so you pay by weight, not by size.

What is the cheapest way to ship clothes?
The short answer
The cheapest way to ship clothes you sold on a marketplace is the platform’s own prepaid label: on Poshmark and Vinted the buyer pays for it, on Depop the buyer pays by default, and Mercari and eBay sell you labels at their own rates. For your own store, pack soft clothes in a poly mailer and ship USPS Ground Advantage, bought online.
Switch to a Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope or box when a heavy order fits inside it. Everything else comes down to the two numbers USPS prices on: weight and size.
Shipping a marketplace sale: use the prepaid label
The short answer
A marketplace sale ships cheapest on that marketplace’s own label. It is cheap or free to you, the tracking is tied to the order, and the platform’s cover for lost or damaged parcels usually applies only when you used its label.
| Platform | Who pays | The label | Ship within | If it goes missing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poshmark | The buyer, a flat $6.49 | Prepaid USPS Ground Advantage label, emailed as a PDF, or a QR code | Most sellers ship within 2 days; unshipped on day 14 may be canceled | Not reimbursed if Poshmark’s label was not used |
| Depop (US) | The buyer, unless you offer a shipping discount | Prepaid USPS label or a QR code, by email and in the app | Most within 2 days; not shipped within 10 days, canceled and refunded | Depop Protection up to $300, with the Depop label only |
| Mercari | You or the buyer, your choice when listing | Prepaid USPS, UPS or FedEx label, by email and on the Order Status page | Within 3 business days | Shipping Protection up to $200 on prepaid labels |
| Vinted (US) | The buyer, who also picks the carrier | Prepaid USPS, FedEx or SpeedX label or QR code | Within 5 business days, with the Vinted label only | USPS and FedEx up to $100, SpeedX up to $15 |
| eBay | You set the shipping; the final value fee counts shipping you charge | eBay Labels: USPS, FedEx or UPS, with tracking uploaded automatically | Within the handling time you set | Depends on the carrier service you buy |
The full rules sit in each platform guide: Poshmark, Depop, Mercari, Vinted and eBay.
Poshmark shipping: how much is it, and what is the weight limit?
Poshmark shipping costs the buyer a flat $6.49, and the seller gets a prepaid USPS Ground Advantage label, per Poshmark’s shipping rates page. It costs you nothing while the parcel weighs 5 pounds or less.
Heavier parcels need an upgraded label, paid from your earnings: $5.00 for 5.01 to 10 pounds and $10.00 for 10.01 to 15 pounds, per the overweight label page. A pair of boots or a winter coat can cross the line alone, so put it on the scale before you agree to a Bundle.
Skip the free Priority Mail boxes. Poshmark’s How to ship a sale page says USPS charges a $5 fee when Priority Mail packaging travels on its Ground Advantage labels, taken from your balance.
How to ship Depop orders
In the US, Depop Shipping sends you a QR code for a USPS drop-off plus a label you can print, by email and in the app, per its US shipping page. Its USPS shipping policy asks you to enter the parcel size accurately when you list, because that size calculates the shipping cost. Pack the item before you list it.
Depop Protection covers loss or damage in transit only when you used the Depop label. In the UK, Depop Shipping runs through Evri, per its UK shipping page.
Mercari, Vinted and eBay
- Mercari lets you choose who pays for the label when you list, per its shipping for sellers page. Its packing page rounds every parcel over a pound up to the next whole pound, so weigh the packed item. The lower Best rate applies to packages of one cubic foot or less with a longest side of 22 inches or less.
- Vinted lets the buyer choose the carrier and pay for the label. Its US shipping page says the order is canceled automatically if you use a different label, and its selling basics give you 5 business days to send it. UK carriers are on the UK shipping page.
- eBay leaves the shipping price to you, and its fee page counts shipping collected from the buyer in the total the final value fee is taken from. Its eBay Labels page promises savings over retail rates on USPS, FedEx or UPS, uploads tracking automatically, and emails a QR code if you have no printer.
Shipping from your own store: Ground Advantage or Priority Mail?
The short answer
For most clothing orders from your own store, USPS Ground Advantage is the cheapest way to mail clothes: 2–5 days, tracking and $100 of insurance included, priced by weight and distance. Priority Mail is faster at 2–3 days, and its Flat Rate envelopes and boxes charge one price up to 70 lbs, which beats Ground Advantage for heavy items that fit.
| Service | Delivery | Packaging | Priced by | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | 2–5 days | Your own packaging | Weight (ounce tiers under 1 lb, then per pound) and distance | Most clothing orders, especially light ones |
| Priority Mail, your own box | 2–3 days | Your own box, or free Priority Mail boxes | Weight and distance | Orders that must arrive faster |
| Priority Mail Flat Rate | 2–3 days | Free Flat Rate envelopes and boxes only | One price per envelope or box, up to 70 lbs, anywhere in the US | Heavy items that fit: jeans bundles, coats, boots |
Ground Advantage takes parcels up to 70 lbs and 130 inches of combined length and girth, per USPS’s Ground Advantage page. Priority Mail also takes 70 lbs but only 108 inches, per its Priority Mail page, which lists clothing among the uses of the Padded Flat Rate Envelope. At the counter, Ground Advantage starts at a lower price than Priority Mail.
Buy labels online, not at the counter
USPS says every Click-N-Ship user gets discounted commercial pricing, lower than Post Office prices, and can schedule a free pickup from home. Rates change, so check the current USPS price list or run your parcel through the price calculator before you set your shipping charge.
How to weigh a package, and why every ounce tier matters
The short answer
Weigh the sealed parcel on a postal or kitchen scale and round up. Under a pound, USPS Ground Advantage prices in four tiers (up to 4, 8, 12 and 15.999 oz); from 1 lb it prices per pound, rounded up. An ounce over a tier line moves you into the next price.
USPS’s how to send a package page recommends a kitchen or postage scale, not a bathroom scale, when you are not using Flat Rate packaging. The rounding, from the Ground Advantage page:
- Under a pound: a 4.2 oz parcel pays the 8 oz price. Just over a tier line? A lighter mailer may bring it back under.
- Over a pound: each pound rounds up. USPS’s own example: 8.3 lb pays the 9 lb price, so a 17 oz parcel pays the 2 lb price.
- Weigh with the packaging. The mailer, tissue and card all count. Enter that weight in the listing, not the item’s weight.
How to package clothes for shipping
The short answer
Soft clothes go in a poly mailer, folded to the mailer’s size and wrapped in tissue or a clear bag to keep them dry. Shoes, structured bags and anything that crushes go in the smallest box that fits. Keep boxes under one cubic foot, because past that USPS can charge by size instead of weight.
Poly mailers or boxes?
Mercari’s packing page recommends an envelope, poly mailer or softpak for items that are not fragile or bendable, with clothing as its example. A mailer weighs almost nothing. A box earns its extra weight when the item must keep its shape: shoes, hats, structured bags, beading or a stiff collar.

Dimensional weight, in plain terms
For a package over one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS multiplies length × width × height and divides by 139, after rounding each side up to the whole inch. If the result is more than the real weight, you pay the dimensional weight.
A 14 × 12 × 12 inch box is 2,016 cubic inches, a dimensional weight of about 14.5 pounds, so two sweaters in it pay far more than they weigh. The same sweaters in a mailer never reach the threshold. Parcels longer than 22 inches also pay a nonstandard fee, per both USPS service pages.
Fold to reduce size
- T-shirts and tops: fold in thirds lengthwise, then in half or thirds, to the width of the mailer.
- Jeans and trousers: fold in half lengthwise, then in thirds. Denim is heavy, so weigh it before you promise free shipping.
- Coats: sleeves in, then in thirds. A bulky coat can be cheaper in a Flat Rate box than by weight: compare both.
Waterproofing and sealing
Wrap the folded piece in a clear bag or tissue sealed with a sticker, so a torn corner or a wet doorstep never reaches the fabric. USPS asks for 2-inch-wide packing tape on every seam of a box, and no string or twine, which gets caught in its sorting equipment.
How to ship shoes, knits and delicate clothes
The short answer
Shoes ship in a box, never loose in a mailer. Knits ship folded, never on a hanger. Anything with beads, sequins or delicate trim gets tissue over the trim, and a box if it could be crushed.
- Shoes and sneakers: stuff them with paper to hold the shape, wrap each shoe, and put the shoebox inside a shipping box. Mercari’s packing page warns that a retail box alone is not sturdy enough. The shoe photography guide covers the listing side.
- Knits: fold loosely and keep them flat. A sweater stretched on a hanger arrives with shoulder bumps.
- Sequins, beads and embellishment: turn the piece inside out or lay tissue over the trim, then fold away from it.
- Leather and structured bags: stuff with paper, wrap the hardware, and cushion the box so nothing shifts, as USPS asks for fragile items.
- Photograph it before you seal it. Mercari suggests a photo of the packed item before and after taping. It is your record if a buyer reports damage.
Do thank-you notes and branded packaging matter?
The short answer
Yes, as long as they stay light. A clean fold, tissue and a short thank-you note cost little and give a buyer a reason to come back, while a heavy gift box can push the parcel into a higher weight tier.
- Resellers: a short handwritten note, which Mercari’s shipping page also suggests, with your shop name so the buyer can find you again.
- Small brands: a card with your logo, care instructions and a code for the next order, plus a sticker to seal the tissue. See how to start an online boutique for the rest of the brand setup.
- Keep it light. Every extra ounce is paid on every order.
How to pack and ship clothes, step by step
The short answer
Weigh and measure when you list, pack in the smallest mailer or box that protects the piece, weigh again sealed, print the right label, and drop off within the platform’s deadline. Done in a weekly or twice-weekly batch, it takes minutes per order.
- Weigh and measure when you list. Fold the item into the mailer or box you will use, weigh it on a postal or kitchen scale, round up, and enter that weight and size in the listing.
- Choose the smallest packaging that protects it. A poly mailer for soft clothes, a box for shoes, structured bags and anything that can crush.
- Clean, fold and wrap. Lint-roll the piece, fold it to the mailer size, and wrap it in tissue or a clear bag so it stays dry.
- Add the note and packing slip. A thank-you card or handwritten note, and for your own store a packing slip with the buyer’s name and address inside.
- Seal, weigh again and print the label. Weigh the sealed parcel, then print the marketplace’s prepaid label, or buy one online for your own orders.
- Label it. Put the label flat on one side, parallel to the longest edge and not folded over it, and cover every old label and barcode on reused packaging.
- Drop off or schedule a pickup, then mark it shipped. Hand it over within the platform’s deadline, keep the receipt, and mark the order shipped if the platform asks.
A batch shipping routine
Keep one table as a packing station: mailers in two sizes, boxes, tissue, tape, the scale and the printer. Pack every open order in one sitting, as often as your shortest deadline needs. Mercari asks for 3 business days, so a weekly batch is too slow there.
Does USPS include tracking and insurance?
The short answer
Yes. USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail both include USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance, with Priority Mail’s cover applying to most shipments. On a marketplace, the platform’s own cover applies when you used its label.
For a pricier item, buy more cover: on Ground Advantage, USPS sells up to $5,000 of extra coverage against loss or damage for merchandise. Keep the drop-off receipt until the buyer has the parcel. Vinted, for one, compensates a lost parcel only when you used its label, packed it properly and the carrier confirmed the loss, per its compensation page.
How to ship clothes internationally: the customs form
The short answer
USPS requires a customs form on anything you send from the US to another country, apart from First-Class Mail International letters and large envelopes. Every item needs a specific description, such as “men’s cotton shirts”, not “clothes”.
USPS’s customs forms page says the form depends on the service and the value you send. Without clear descriptions, customs in the receiving country may reject, return or even destroy the package.
Click-N-Ship prints the customs form for you when you buy international postage there. The buyer’s country may add duties and taxes, so state in your store policy who pays them. On a marketplace, ship abroad only the way the platform allows.
How to handle returns on clothes you sold online
The short answer
On a marketplace, returns follow the platform’s process and its label. From your own store, write a return policy and send USPS return labels, which cost you nothing until they are used.
USPS says Click-N-Ship return labels are free to print and charged only once used, and Ground Advantage’s included $100 insurance covers return shipments too. Put the return window, the condition you accept and who pays return shipping in your policy. If returns keep saying “too small”, fix your size chart and photos, not your shipping.
What slows resellers down more than shipping?
The short answer
Listing, not shipping, is what slows most resellers down. With a packing station and a weekly batch, shipping takes minutes per order, while every new item still needs measurements, a description and photos before it can sell.
Platform rules decide where each photo goes. Depop, Vinted and Mercari require listing photos you took yourself, so on those apps every photo is yours, worn shot included. Poshmark asks for your own photo as the main one, so an on-model photo can go further down the listing. On your own store, social media and ads, you choose.
That is where Tryly fits. With its AI clothing photography, you upload a flat or hanger photo of the piece and choose one of 500+ models, your own model or yourself. One photo is one credit, as low as $0.25 per photo, and photos made on a paid plan can be used on your store, in ads and on social media.

Questions about shipping clothes
What is the cheapest way to ship clothes?+
For a marketplace sale, use the platform’s prepaid label: the buyer pays for it on Poshmark and Vinted, and by default on Depop. For your own store, ship soft clothes in a poly mailer on USPS Ground Advantage, bought online through Click-N-Ship at commercial prices below Post Office rates. Keep the parcel small and light, because USPS prices by weight tier and, for big boxes, by size.
How much is Poshmark shipping?+
The buyer pays a flat $6.49, and Poshmark emails you a prepaid USPS Ground Advantage label. That label covers up to 5 pounds. From 5.01 to 10 pounds you pay a $5.00 upgrade and from 10.01 to 15 pounds $10.00, taken from your earnings; over 15 pounds needs an additional label. Check Poshmark’s shipping page, since fees change.
How do I ship Depop orders?+
In the US, Depop Shipping gives you a prepaid USPS label as a QR code for a USPS drop-off or a label to print. Enter the parcel size accurately when you list, because it sets the shipping cost. Ship within two days if you can: an order not shipped within 10 days is canceled and refunded.
Is a poly mailer or a box cheaper for clothes?+
A poly mailer is cheaper for soft clothes. It weighs almost nothing and folds to the size of the item, so the parcel stays in a lower weight tier and never gets near the one cubic foot where USPS starts charging by size. Use a box for shoes, structured bags and anything that crushes.
Is Priority Mail Flat Rate worth it for clothing?+
Sometimes. Priority Mail Flat Rate charges one price per envelope or box for anything up to 70 lbs going anywhere in the US, and USPS lists clothing as a use for the Padded Flat Rate Envelope. It pays off for heavy items that fit, such as jeans or a coat. For a light top, Ground Advantage by weight is usually lower. Compare both in the USPS price calculator.
Do I need a customs form to ship clothes to another country?+
Yes. USPS requires customs forms for items sent from the US to another country, apart from First-Class Mail International letters and large envelopes. Each item needs a specific description, such as “men’s cotton shirts”, not “clothes”, or the receiving country may reject or return the package. Click-N-Ship prints the label and customs form together.
Can I use AI model photos in my marketplace listings?+
Only where the platform allows it. Depop, Vinted and Mercari require listing photos you took yourself, while Poshmark asks for your own photo as the main one, so an on-model photo can go further down the listing. Photos made with Tryly on a paid plan can be used on your own store, in ads and on social media; start with 10 free photos, no card.
