Etsy seller fees: every fee on Etsy’s own pages
The short answer
Most Etsy sellers pay three fees on every sale: the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee. Offsite Ads, Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus, currency conversion and a regulatory operating fee apply only in some cases, and some locations pay a one-time set-up fee.
| Fee | Amount | When it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing | When you publish, whether or not it sells. The listing runs four months. |
| Auto-renew (expired) | $0.20 | Each time an expired listing renews automatically, the default for new listings. |
| Auto-renew (sold) and multi-quantity | $0.20 per extra item sold | When a listing with stock left renews after a sale, or a buyer takes more than one. |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of the order total | On every sale: item price, shipping and gift wrap you charge, and paid personalization. |
| Payment processing | US: 3% + $0.25 | On every Etsy Payments order, on the total including shipping and tax. Varies by bank country. |
| Offsite Ads | 15%, or 12% over $10,000 a year | Only on orders from an Etsy ad off Etsy, capped at $100 per order. |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.05% to 1.97% | Sellers in the UK, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, India, Türkiye and Vietnam. |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% of the sale | Only if your listing currency differs from your payment account currency. |
| Set-up fee | Varies by location | One-time and non-refundable, if your location has one; shown during shop set-up. |
| Etsy Plus | $10 a month | Optional subscription with listing and ad credits. |
| Etsy Ads | Your daily budget | Optional ads inside Etsy search; you set the daily maximum. |
From Etsy’s fees and taxes page, its Etsy Fee Basics and its Fees & Payments Policy. Listing fees and Etsy Plus are published in US dollars and converted to your payment account currency.
The Etsy listing fee and auto-renew
Etsy listings expire after four months. Per its renewal guide, new listings renew automatically by default, at $0.20 each time, until you switch the listing to manual.
Selling one of several in stock also costs $0.20: the listing auto-renews so the rest stay for sale. Etsy’s multi-quantity page gives the example of ten bowls listed for $0.20 and sold out, which adds $1.80 more. Editing is free. Budget $0.20 per item sold, plus $0.20 every four months for each unsold piece.
The Etsy transaction fee: 6.5%, shipping included
The transaction fee is 6.5% of the price you display plus the shipping and gift wrapping you charge, per the Fees & Payments Policy. Paid personalization counts as part of the price. For US sellers it does not apply to sales tax; outside the US it applies to a listing price that includes the taxes you are responsible for.
Etsy payment processing fees in the US, UK and EU
The short answer
Etsy payment processing fees depend on where your bank account is: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK and 4% + €0.30 in eurozone countries. They are taken from the order total, including shipping and any sales tax, and come on top of the 6.5% transaction fee.
| Bank account in | Processing fee | Regulatory operating fee |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 3% + $0.25 | None |
| United Kingdom | 4% + £0.20 | 0.48% |
| Canada (domestic, or orders from the US) | 3% + C$0.25 (4% + C$0.25 other international) | 0.50% |
| Germany, Netherlands, Ireland and most of the EU | 4% + €0.30 | None |
| France | 4% + €0.30 | 1.14% |
| Italy | 4% + €0.30 | 0.80% |
| Spain | 4% + €0.30 | 0.88% |
| Australia (domestic orders) | 3% + A$0.25 (4% + A$0.25 international) | None |
Processing rates from Etsy’s payment processing fee page, which lists every country; regulatory operating fees from its regulatory operating fee page. That fee is charged on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap.
- Sales tax costs processing too. If a buyer pays $4.40 in sales tax on a $55 order, the US processing fee rises by about $0.13.
- Refunds return processing in part. Refund a sale and the processing fee is credited in proportion to the amount refunded.
- UK and EU sellers may pay VAT on fees. Etsy’s VAT on seller fees page says UK and EU sellers who have not given Etsy a VAT ID see VAT added to their fees; in Ireland it is charged either way.
A UK example: a £40 knit with £4 shipping pays £2.86 transaction fee, £1.96 processing and £0.21 regulatory operating fee, plus the converted listing fee.
Etsy fees worked out: what a US seller keeps at six prices
The short answer
After Etsy fees, a US seller keeps about $44.32 of a $50 item with $5 shipping, $134.82 of a $150 item and $270.57 of a $300 item, once the postage is paid. That is 84% to 90% of the item price. On a sale through Offsite Ads at 15%, it drops to about 64% to 75%.
| Item price | Order total | Transaction 6.5% | Processing | Total fees | You keep | Kept | Keep with Offsite Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $20 | $1.30 | $0.85 | $2.35 | $12.65 | 84.3% | $9.65 |
| $30 | $35 | $2.28 | $1.30 | $3.78 | $26.22 | 87.4% | $20.97 |
| $50 | $55 | $3.58 | $1.90 | $5.68 | $44.32 | 88.6% | $36.07 |
| $80 | $85 | $5.53 | $2.80 | $8.53 | $71.47 | 89.3% | $58.72 |
| $150 | $155 | $10.08 | $4.90 | $15.18 | $134.82 | 89.9% | $111.57 |
| $300 | $305 | $19.83 | $9.40 | $29.43 | $270.57 | 90.2% | $224.82 |
How the table is built: each order adds $5 shipping, spent on postage. Fees are $0.20, plus 6.5% and 3% + $0.25 of the order total, each rounded to the cent. “You keep” is before materials and your time, with no sales tax in the order.
Low prices give up the biggest share. On a $15 item, the two fixed charges ($0.20 and $0.25) are 3% of the price on their own. Shipping is a second trap: you pay 9.5% on the $5 you only pass on to the courier. The guide to shipping clothes cheaply compares the options.

How Etsy Offsite Ads change what you keep
The short answer
Etsy Offsite Ads charge 15% of the order total on sales from an Etsy ad shown off Etsy, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in any 365 days, capped at $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; shops that reach it must stay in for the shop’s lifetime.
Etsy runs these ads on search engines, social media and partner sites, and its Offsite Ads page says you cannot choose which listings appear. An order counts when a buyer clicks the ad and buys from your shop within 30 days; if their last click was an Etsy Ad inside Etsy, only the Etsy Ads fee applies.
- What the $10,000 counts: item price times quantity, minus discounts and cancellations, but not shipping, tax or gift wrap, per the Fees & Payments Policy. Etsy checks on the first day of each month.
- What the fee is charged on: the item price plus shipping and gift wrap. US sellers pay no Offsite Ads fee on sales tax.
- Where the cap starts to help: 15% reaches $100 at an order of about $667, so the cap only matters for high-priced pieces.
- How to opt out: Shop Manager, Settings, Offsite Ads, then Opt out of Offsite Ads. You can turn them back on there.
Etsy fees calculator: the list-price formula
The short answer
To price an Etsy listing so the fees are covered, take what you want to keep, add the shipping you charge and $0.45, then divide by 0.905. Subtract the shipping to get the item price. If your shop is in Offsite Ads, divide by 0.755 to cover an ad-driven sale too.
- Decide what you want to keep. Start from the amount you need after fees for the piece, say $40 for a hand-knit hat.
- Add postage and the fixed fees. Add the shipping you will charge (which you spend on postage) and $0.45: the $0.20 listing fee plus the $0.25 processing flat fee.
- Divide by 0.905. Divide by 0.905, which removes the 6.5% transaction fee and 3% processing fee, to get the order total.
- Subtract shipping to get the item price. The order total minus the shipping you charge is the item price to list.
- Check the Offsite Ads case. If your shop is in Offsite Ads, divide by 0.755 instead to see the price that still nets your number on an ad-driven sale.
Worked through: to keep $40 on a hat with $5 shipping, ($40 + $5 + $0.45) ÷ 0.905 = $50.22. List the hat at $45.22 with $5 shipping and you net $40.00. With an Offsite Ads sale in mind, ($40 + $5 + $0.45) ÷ 0.755 = $60.20, so the hat lists at $55.20.
Fees are only part of the price: materials, packaging and your hours come first.
That reply came in a thread on whether a seller’s prices were fair. A higher price needs photos that show why: the knit, the stitching, the fit. The guide to photographing clothes to sell covers the phone method.
Currency conversion, Etsy Plus and Share & Save
The short answer
Three smaller items change the total. Listing in a currency other than your bank’s costs 2.5% of each sale. Etsy Plus costs $10 a month and returns 15 listing credits and $5 in Etsy Ads credit. Share & Save refunds 4% of orders that come through links you share yourself.
- Currency conversion, 2.5%. Per Etsy’s currency conversion page, it comes off the sale when your shop and payment account currencies differ. List in your bank’s currency.
- Etsy Plus, $10 a month. Its Etsy Plus page lists 15 listing credits (worth $3) and $5 of Etsy Ads credit a month, which expire if unused.
- Share & Save, 4% back. Per its Share & Save page, once you join, an order placed within 30 days of a buyer clicking a link you shared earns a 4% refund of the order total. Links in listing descriptions or Etsy Messages do not count, and a later Offsite Ad click takes precedence.
Etsy fee fine print: where Etsy’s own pages differ
The short answer
Etsy names no fixed set-up fee, and its own pages word a few fees differently from each other. Where two pages differ, budget for the larger charge, and treat any set-up figure you see quoted elsewhere as a guess.
- Set-up fee. Etsy’s fees page says only that the cost varies by location and is shown during set-up, and its policy says Etsy can change or waive it.
- Regulatory operating fee countries. The fees overview lists eight countries; the fee’s own page adds Hungary at 1.97%.
- The Offsite Ads base. The policy says the fee is on the total order amount; one line of the Offsite Ads help page calls it the amount you made before the ad fee. Assume the full order total, shipping included.
What clothing can you sell on Etsy?
The short answer
Etsy allows clothing you made, altered or designed, and vintage clothing at least 20 years old that you curated. It does not allow resold clothing that is ready to wear as-is, or newer pieces made to look vintage. Craft supplies such as yarn are allowed too.
| Allowed on Etsy | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Clothes you sew or knit, including on a sewing machine | Resold clothing that is ready to use as-is |
| Hand-altered pieces: embroidery, patches sewn onto a denim jacket | A bought item with only a superficial stick-on change |
| Clothing you embroider on your own computerized machine, from your design | Resold blank T-shirts and hats |
| Your own designs made by a production partner (disclosed in the listing) | Items newer than 20 years made to look vintage |
| Vintage pieces 20+ years old that you curated, such as a 1950s dress | Drop-shipped clothing you did not make or design |
From Etsy’s Creativity Standards, its what can I sell page and its reselling page, which allows reselling only for craft and party supplies, vintage and curated gift baskets. Etsy may ask for more photos or details on vintage pieces, such as source, age or designer.
The guide to vintage clothing labels shows how to date a piece by its tag, and print-on-demand clothing covers selling your own designs.
Etsy photo rules: your own photos of the actual item
The short answer
Etsy requires your own photos of the actual item buyers will receive, not renderings or stock photos. You can add up to 20 photos and two short videos per listing, and Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on each side.
Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements say: “you must use your own photos—either photos you took yourself or had someone take for you.” The same policy asks for original photos of the actual product, and its exceptions cover personalized items and designs printed by a production partner. For a garment you made, altered or curated, the rule is plain: photograph that piece.
- Size: at least 2000 pixels wide and high is recommended, and the first photo needs at least 635 pixels to avoid showing lower in search, per Etsy’s image guidelines.
- Shape: make the first photo horizontal or square, with room around the item, because Etsy crops thumbnails into several shapes.
- Count: up to 20 photos and two videos of 5 to 15 seconds, per its listing guide. Cover the front, back, label, fabric close-up and any flaw.
Zoom out on your main photo, and shoot a few clear photos by a window rather than ten elaborate ones. The lighting guide covers cheap setups.
Where a Tryly photo fits if you sell on Etsy
The short answer
A Tryly photo does not go in an Etsy listing, because Etsy requires your own photos of the actual item. It fits where you sell or promote the same pieces off Etsy: your own site, Instagram and ads, where a worn shot helps a buyer picture the fit.
Tryly’s AI clothing photography starts from the flat, hanger or mannequin photo you already took and shows the same piece on one of 500+ models, or on your own model or yourself.
- In your Etsy listing: only your own photos of the actual piece, its label and any flaws.
- On Instagram: the piece worn, with your Share & Save link in a post or bio, so an order from that click earns a refund of 4% of the order total.
- On your own site: one model across a collection, with no Etsy fees; see the online boutique guide.
Before
AfterCheck every worn photo at full size against the piece in your hand: color, cuffs, hem and length. If anything differs, do not post it. More in Instagram for clothing brands.
Photos made on a paid plan can be used on your store, in ads and on social media. Tryly costs from $9.99/month, from $0.33 per day, and as low as $0.25 per photo: one worn photo for each of 20 pieces is $5.
Etsy fees: questions sellers ask
How much does Etsy take from a sale?+
For a US seller, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 on the order total, and the $0.20 listing fee. That is about 9.5% of the order plus $0.45. On a $50 item with $5 shipping, the fees come to $5.68, and you keep $44.32 after paying the postage.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?+
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping and gift wrap you charge, and the processing fee is taken from the total including shipping and sales tax. Moving shipping into the item price, or charging it separately, does not change the fees.
How much is the Etsy listing fee?+
It is $0.20 per listing, charged when you publish whether or not the item sells. A listing lasts four months; renewing it, automatically or by hand, costs another $0.20. When a listing with stock left sells, or a buyer takes several, you pay $0.20 for each extra item.
Can you turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?+
Yes, if your shop has never made $10,000 or more in any 365-day period: in Shop Manager, go to Settings, then Offsite Ads, and opt out. Once a shop reaches $10,000, Offsite Ads are required for the lifetime of the shop, at a 12% fee instead of 15%.
Is there a fee to open an Etsy shop?+
There may be. Etsy charges a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee where it applies, and says the cost varies by location. If it applies to you, it is displayed and charged during shop set-up, so check that screen rather than relying on a fixed figure.
Can you use model photos in an Etsy listing?+
Only if you took them or had someone take them for you. Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements say you must use your own photos of the actual product, not renderings or stock photos. A generated on-model photo belongs on your own site, Instagram or ads, not in the listing.
Can you sell clothes on Etsy?+
Yes, if you made, altered or designed them, or if they are vintage, meaning at least 20 years old and curated by you. Etsy does not allow resold clothing that is ready to wear as-is, or newer pieces made to look vintage.
